SARAH CHILDS
SUMMER HILL
SEWING EMPORIUM
S arah teaches dressmaking and sewing in a delightfully readapted shearing shed on the historic property Forty Bends.
The space is a haven of inspirations that has a filmset pop to each corner and cupboard. The backdrop is paddocks of commercial peonies that are blooming through November, destined for the Sydney florists. In the workshop, skills are taught in soft furnishing, vintage patterns, casual knits, and classic tailoring. From beginners to the advanced sewer, all levels are catered for.
The emphasis is on wearability, sustainability and enjoying the process.
As a bit of a side highlight each year for the Lithgow Arts Trail …
PEONIES AT FORTY BENDS
The peonies have come very early this year and some of the Itoh peonies have flowered but the season appears to be a good one. We will be selling peonies, still $2 a stem.from Tuesday 17th October.
Notes for Visitors
The emphasis this year reflects the times… MAKE DO AND MEND.
Our peonies are available to buy at market price. Bring a tall bucket.
Embracing the need for sustainable living, I have concentrated on two aspects of sewing.
- Mending, patching, restructuring and repurposing quality clothing.
- Encouraging children and non sewers to begin with hand sewing. Kits and examples are available eg using old hessian bags to learn blanket , cross and padding stitch.
A new addition will also be a sale other plants that we find are suited to the area , old farm tools, tree guards and other paraphernalia at bargain prices. We have even started an edible weed collection … whoever thought if you use the English name ‘wood sorrel ‘ instead of ‘oxalis’ you have a rather pretty lemony salad.
Delicious all day afternoon teas. All home made . Sit in the gardens, verandahs or in the conservatory… vanilla slice, pineapple upside down cake and much more
BRING A TALL BUCKRT FOR PEONIES AND CASH AS OUR SQUARE READER OFTEN DOESN’T WORK.
