TILLIE COSTER
I
have always been fascinated by the form of plants – how there are so many different shapes and sizes of not only the whole plant but the individual leaves with their own unique venation, colouration and texture. Mother Nature also plays a part with the nibbles of the caterpillars, the galls on the leaves and the devastating effects of drought, flood, climate change and fire. I try to capture this in my paintings.
I use tiny dots of pigment in my paintings. This allows me to get a gradation of colour as well as adding texture to the work. A form of Impressionism perhaps.
I also design and make wall hangings or rugs, again using nature as my guide – from the formation of stalagmites in caves, to a branch with blossom and seed heads, to the patterns formed by a river bed meandering across the landscape as seen from a high flying aircraft – anything is an inspiration for a piece.
