GANG GANG GALLERY

Gang Gang Gallery is housed in the heritage space of the Old Refreshments building of the Theatre Royal on Main Street Lithgow. After being purchased 2012, the building has taken on a major development and transformed into what it is today, a contemporary gallery and function space. that has still maintained traditional 1900s features to emphasis the blend of old and new.

Working with local interior and timber artist Damian Howard, the gallery has been designed to host exhibitions of artists in the light filled main space and along with a permanent collection of glassware, porcelain, timber and iron work. Gang Gang has an earnest and growing connection with the local community and aims to embrace the future of the Blue Mountains whilst paying tribute to its past.

Opening its doors on 1st October 2017, Gang Gang features a variety of contemporary art from the Blue Mountains region, Central Western NSW as well as other parts of Australia. The gallery has a focus on representational pieces from all traditions, expressionist to abstract and even kitch in a multitude of mediums, including sculpture, textile, paint and ceramic.

IDEAL STATES AND SACRED PLACES with PENNIE STEEL

IDEAL STATES AND SACRED PLACES

We carry with us, both internally and externally, physically and mentally, memories, learned experiences, cultural differences, spiritual values and expectations and through these we form ourselves.
As a female, I look very much to the internalization of these complexities and my art is informed by my debate. There is something intrinsically humanly female about the need to make spaces which reflect the desire to make comfortable and safe places.
The paintings and sculptures explore the notion of personae and cultural mythologies and the poetry of the spaces between the self and its manifestations. They are related through a common theme.
The imagined towns and cities and ancient settlements manifest in the paintings and constructed within the safe confines of the cloches, are reminiscent of places remembered, experienced and dreamed of.
The works are informed and shaped by cultural differences, which are heightened by the very nature of displacement, migration or journeying from one place to another. I have brought them into existence.

They are of nowhere and yet they are everywhere.

ARTIST WORKSHOP

Join artist Pennie Steel for an enchanting journey into the world of “Ideal States and Sacred Places” at WOES-OP Gallery. This workshop, set against the picturesque backdrop of Lithgow, invites you to delve into the profound meaning behind these concepts and explore how they resonate within your own life. What does your ideal state look like, and does it find its roots in a particular place? These are the questions we will ponder together.

Under Pennie Steel’s guidance, you’ll unlock your creativity and craft 3D pieces using recycled card paper, with a twist—only white materials will be used, eliminating color distractions and focusing on the purity of your ideas. Learn to shape 2D and 3D forms, incorporate stencils and patterns, and assemble small elements into something personal and enchanting—a keepsake that captures your fears, joys, dreams, memories, experiences, and hopes.

The process will involve the use of craft knives, scissors, paper, guillotines, and glue, and all materials will be provided, allowing you to immerse yourself fully in this expressive journey. No prior artistic experience is required; just an open heart and an eagerness to explore your inner world.

This workshop is suitable for participants aged 12 and over. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to create and cherish a piece of art that represents your unique vision of Ideal States and Sacred Places. Join us on Saturday, November 18th, from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM at GANG Gallery, 206 Main St, Lithgow, NSW. Secure your spot for $70 and embark on a creative adventure that promises to leave a lasting impression on your artistic soul. For more information, contact info@gggallery.com.au.
