Mary works from her home studio in the Blue Mountains valley of Lithgow. In 2009 she took the chance to follow her dream and began formal art training.
Commencing study with a certificate in Fine art and Design at Northern Rivers Tafe, she then sought intensive traditional skills studying over a number of years at Julian Ashton Art School Sydney, and with American artist Jonathan Hardesty; Classical Art Online. Recently she has completed a Diploma of Fine Art at Nepean Art Design Centre, Kingswood. During her study Mary has taken numerous workshops and attended lessons with a number of skilled artists.
Particularly she would like to acknowledge the role of AniArt Academy Language of Painting and Language of Drawing courses by Anthony Waichulis in her learning. Mary continues to study and read, attending galleries and exhibitions as much as humanly possible always seeks to learn and apply that knowledge to her practice.
Deep observation of nature, people, objects and ideas, as well as wide reading and a background in a number of academic disciplines underpin Mary’s approach to visual work.
Favouring representational work, with a connection with symbolist, romantic, and classical pictorial approaches Mary melds this with contemporary sensibilities.
A multi-disciplinary artist Mary works in painting in oil and watercolour, drawing in various media, ceramics both sculptural and vessel forms, and printmaking. The choice of media and form is always made to best express the idea or subject.
Mary’s professional experience includes teaching drawing at a local community group and in private lessons, completing commissioned works for a local museum, and being the secretary of Blackheath Art Society, 2020. She looks forward to running workshops and developing a forum for sharing of art making ideas and insights.
